Radio BGM, Llanelli’s long-standing community and hospital radio station based at the Prince Philip Hospital, has been recognised as one of the top stations in the UK – bringing home three national awards from the 2025 Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA) Awards.
At the ceremony held in Hinckley, Leicestershire on Saturday 5th April, the station was awarded Bronze in the coveted ‘Station of the Year’ category, officially naming Radio BGM as the best in Wales and in the top three hospital radio stations in the UK.
The station also won Gold for Best Specialist Music Programme, thanks to a compelling documentary-style show inspired by Radio Caroline, and Gold for Best Special Event for its lively and heartfelt coverage of Radio BGM’s 50th Anniversary.
Radio BGM was a finalist in seven categories — a testament to the passion, creativity and dedication of its volunteer team. Two of Radio BGM’s presenters Steff Griffiths and Paul Scott also placed inside the top 10 best presenters across the UK and top 5 best in Wales.
Chairman David Hurford said:
“It’s incredible to receive one award, let alone three. This recognition is particularly special as we’ve just marked our 50th Anniversary — a year filled with celebrations and tireless work from our volunteers. Winning ‘Station of the Year’ really is the cherry on top. Here’s to another 50 years of serving our community and making great radio.”
2024 was a milestone year for the station. Alongside anniversary celebrations and community events, Radio BGM secured funding from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF), which enabled a complete refurbishment of the main studio. Now fitted with modern, industry-standard digital audio equipment, the station’s facilities rival those of national broadcasters.
The HBA Awards are a national celebration of excellence in hospital, health, and wellbeing broadcasting. Run by the Hospital Broadcasting Association, the awards recognise the vital role these stations play in supporting patients, staff and communities across the UK.
Now entering the next chapter, the station is calling on the community to get involved. Radio BGM is actively seeking volunteers for a variety of roles — from presenting and production to events, fundraising and community engagement.
